Tips for Comparing Large SUVs
You're ready to purchase a sport utility vehicle (SUV), and you've set your sights on a big one. In addition to examining the features available on large SUVs, several other factors and considerations can help you make comparisons.
-
Price Categories
-
"U.S. News and World Report" divides large SUVs into "affordable" and "luxury" categories, with those costing more than $35,000 falling into the latter classification. Determining your price range can determine which models you should examine closely.
Safety
-
The Safecar website provides government ratings for vehicle crash safety on a scale from one to five stars, with five being the safest. The 2010 Toyota Sequoia received four stars for rollover safety, while the 2010 Infiniti QX56 got three stars in the same category. The Infiniti received five stars for frontal driver protection. The website did not rate the Sequoia in this category.
-
Fuel Use
-
Compare large SUVs by how far they will travel on a gallon of gasoline. The U.S. Department of Energy reports the 2011 GMC Yukon with four-wheel drive gets 21 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway, while the 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser in four-wheel drive gets 18.
Rankings
-
"U.S. News and World Report" ranks the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban as the best large SUV in the affordable category, while the 2011 Infiniti QX56 leads the luxury classification. You can also get opinions on large SUVs by reading free reviews on the websites of "Car and Driver," Edmunds and "Motor Trend."
Warranties
-
Those who purchase a 2011 Land Rover Range Rover or Cadillac Escalade receive four years and 50,000 miles of basic warranty coverage. The coverage on a 2011 Ford Expedition drops to three years or 36,000 miles.
