The Significance of the Study in the Effectiveness of Lemongrass As a Mosquito Repellent

Extract from lemongrass repels mosquitoes.

Although lemongrass oil repels mosquitoes, it does not work as well as chemical repellents for several reasons.

Duration

Plant oil in liquid form must be reapplied frequently.

When lemongrass oil is added to liquid repellents, it does not keep mosquitoes away as long as chemical counterparts like DEET.

Regulation

Higher concentrations of oil have better repellent qualities.

Oil derived from plants like lemongrass is not regulated like chemical repellents. While it may be listed on an ingredient label, it is not possible to tell if it's present in a high enough concentration.

The Base of the Repellent

Unlike chemicals, lemongrass oil is not studied for long-term effects.

The base of an insect repellent containing lemongrass oil differs between manufacturers. A hydrophilic ointment base, commonly used with medications, with at least 15 percent concentration is the most effective formula.
