How to Learn the Qur'an at Home
The Qur'an is the primary holy book of Islam. Muslims believe that the holy Qur'an is God's final scripture and testament as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Traditionally, the Qur'an must be read in Arabic.
-
Learn Arabic
-
Gain proficiency in reading Arabic, the language in which the Qur'an is written and traditionally read. Devotees place great importance on reading it in its original language. The most common ways to learn Arabic include: teaching or tutoring from an Arabic speaker, perhaps at a local mosque; taking a correspondence or on-line language course from a college, university, public, or private website; using foreign language training software. Some of these courses can be found in the References and Resources list below.
How believers read the Qur'an
-
Read the Qur'an in the recitative style that believers use, and at designated times of day. Once you have a rudimentary understanding of Arabic you should learn Qaida (the Arabic alphabet), Tajweed (the rules of recitation of the Qur'an), and the Salaah (the calculation of prayer times).
-
Read and Discuss the Qur'an
-
Spend time reading and discussing the Qur'an with believers. Invite those who know the Qur'an to your home to read together and engage in discussions to enhance your authoritive understanding of the Qur'an.
Beyond Reading
-
Supplement your readings by learning the history and context of the Arabic peoples. Study Islamic teachings by reading Dua (prayers of supplication) and Hadees (collections and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad).
