Some people may look back on the 1980s with disgust while others remember the fashion, music and movies with fondness. An '80s themed birthday party would go over well with the latter group. When planning the party, think back on all the things--good and bad--that were popular during that decade.

Music

An '80s themed party wouldn't be complete without music. You can hire a DJ to play music from the decade or download songs by artists such as Talking Heads, Culture Club and the Smiths, then plug your MP3 player into a set of speakers. Since the 1980s saw the rise of the music video, you may want to have a collection of videos playing in the background.

Decorations

Decorations at an '80s themed party should be neon and slightly garish. Pick streamers, balloons and tableware in colors such as lime green, fluorescent yellow and hot pink. You can also decorate yourself by teasing your hair, wearing leg warmers, high waisted acid washed jeans or leggings.

Activities

Keep guests entertained by screening popular films from the '80s, such as "Pretty in Pink" or "Sixteen Candles." If guests are in the mood for something darker, show "Wall Street." You can also have karaoke, where guests must sing songs from the decade, or hold a "Thriller" dance-off.
