Spider Mites in a Greenhouse
Spider mites are small insects that can harm your plants if they get into your greenhouse. According to the University of Texas A&M, the best way to get rid of spider mites is to first identify them and then develop a strategy. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Identification
-
Spider mites are small, with green or brown spots on their bodies. They are known to spin small webs on plants and to cause bronzing leaves. Spider mite eggs are found on the underside of leaves and are either red or yellow.
Considerations
-
You often need a magnifying lens to see mites properly. They have small points on their mouths to suck out plant cells. According to Texas A&M, spider mite damage resembles brown stipples.
-
Prevention/Solution
-
Dry plants are more susceptible to spider mites than watered plants. Using an overheard water sprinkler will cut down mites. Other options include using high pressure sprays to blow off the mites and using biological agents to kill them. If you use chemicals, it's possible the spider mites will develop a tolerance later on.
