The Definition of Terrazzo thumbnail
Terrazzo surfaces are renowned for their beauty and durability.

Terrazzo is a material used in construction of flooring and countertops. Terrazzo is a composite material comprised of cement, color pigments, and chippings of other materials, usually marble. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • Terrazzo is an Italian creation, and is an Italian word meaning terraces. The earliest examples of terrazzo date back to 15th century Venice, when workers discovered that mixing marble chips with clay created both a visually appealing and comfortable walking surface. Craftsmen brought terrazzo to America in the 1700s, and since then, it changed to include pigments, polyesters, and other materials to improve its appearance and longevity.

    Benefits

    • Terrazzo is very durable and easy to maintain, mostly because it is a singular, flat surface with no tiles or other areas that can chip or be damaged. Terrazzo can withstand heavy weight, does not stain, and can be cleaned with basic cleaning supplies. When properly cared for, a terrazzo floor can last decades.

    Uses

    • Because of its durability, terrazzo is often used in public buildings with heavy foot traffic. Schools, shopping malls, and hospitals commonly use terrazzo flooring. Slabs of the surface are also commonly seen in homes as kitchen countertop material.
