How to Buy a Good Garden Hose
Although cost is a significant factor in purchasing a garden hose, it may be worth spending a few extra dollars for a durable, kink-free hose. Cheaper hoses wear out quickly and, after a few seasons of use, need replacing. Hose length, size and materials are other factors to consider when buying a garden hose. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Length Considerations
-
Hoses are made in lengths ranging from 10 feet to more than 100 feet. Choose a length that reaches the areas of your yard needing water. A hose that is too long is not as easy to maneuver, can tangle easily and is harder to wind up and store. Another consideration is water pressure; water pressure is diminished in longer hoses.
Diameter Considerations
-
The diameter of the hose affects water pressure and watering time. Hoses are typically 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch in diameter. Larger-diameter hoses maintain the water pressure better, and watering takes less time because more water comes out. For garden or lawn watering, a 5/8-inch hose is sufficient.

Material Considerations
-
Garden hoses are made of rubber, vinyl or a combination of the two materials. Vinyl hoses tend to cost less and do not weigh as much; however, they are prone to kinking and do not last as long. Although rubber hoses cost more and weigh more, they are more durable and resist kinking. Hoses made with a combination of materials are fairly flexible and durable and are more reasonably priced.
