The Longevity Diet Plan
The Longevity Diet was designed by Brian Delaney and Lisa Walford, experts on anti-aging nutrition. In their book, The Longevity Diet, Delaney and Walford explain the science behind caloric restriction to lead a longer, healthier life.
-
Basics
-
The Longevity Diet consists of eating fewer calories a day. Dieters focus on consuming foods that are rich in nutrients, supplying maximum nutrition with minimal calories, thus reducing the intake of the so-called "empty calories" found in junk food. The diet focuses on the intake of low-glycemic and high fiber foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and lean protein. The diet seeks to reduce daily caloric intake by about 25 percent.
Research
-
The claims that this diet slows the process of aging and increases vitality and health come from studies done on mice and other mammals. Research has shown that when these animals eat a low-calorie diet, they live longer, stay healthier and develop less diseases than the animals who consume more calories.
-
Exercise
-
Since exercising increases the body's need for calories, dieters who follow a calorie restriction program exercise moderately or not at all. However, moderate exercise is recommended in the initial implementation of this diet.
Cautions
-
This diet can lead to excessive weight loss, which can increase the chances of some diseases. It should be followed carefully, preferably under the supervision of a health care professional.
