What are the Workplace Bathroom Stall Laws? thumbnail
Follow ADA requirements for bathroom facilities.

On the federal level, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and its supplemental publications describe the requirements for restrooms in the workplace. States and municipalities may use the same guidelines or add more stringent details. Check local ordinances.

  1. Number

    • A location must provide at least one handicapped-accessible stall and no less than 5 percent of the stalls in a multiple-stall restroom. An accessible toilet room or water closet may be substituted if renovation of one or more stalls proves impractical. In a facility with several restroom locations, each location shall provide an accessible stall or clear directions to the nearest one.

    Size

    • An accessible stall must have sufficient space to allow a wheelchair-bound employee to enter, turn and access the facilities. The doorway of the stall must permit the wheelchair to enter. The actual size depends on the construction of the fixtures used, according to the U.S.Department of Justice.

    Amenities

    • Accessible toilets range between 17 and 19 inches tall at the seat. Grab rails installed on the walls assist users in sitting and rising. Position tissue holders and toilet flush handles located within the user's reach.
