Keep your toddler safe around windows.

If you have a toddler, it's a good idea to toddler-proof your house to make it safe for little ones. Not only does this keep your child safe, it lets you relax your guard a bit because your child will stay safe inside your home. When toddler-proofing your home, make sure to consider window safety issues.

  1. Preventing Falls

    • Install locks or vent guards on windows so they can only open a few inches, especially on upstairs windows. Do not leave toddlers unsupervised near open windows from which they could fall.

    Furniture Placement

    • Avoid putting furniture like cribs, beds or chairs directly below windows. Many windows are too high for a toddler to simply fall out of, but toddlers can often climb on furniture to reach a higher window.

    Drapery and Blind Cords

    • Long cords on draperies or blinds can strangle a toddler. To prevent problems, bunch up the cords and secure them with a rubber band or a twisty tie (like the kind used of loafs of bread or garbage bags) to hold them in place higher than the toddler can reach.
