How Much Beer Can a Keg Hold?

Kegs of beer can be purchased at many liquor stores. Usually, the customer is required to put a deposit on the keg (and perhaps a keg tap) in addition to the cost of the beer. Kegs are often bought for home events, such as large anniversary and birthday parties. Beer kegs are also a staple in restaurants and bars.

In the United States, a standard beer keg holds approximately 15.5 gallons of beer, or 1,984 ounces. If you are serving beer in 8 oz. glasses, you should be able to pour nearly 248 glasses of beer.

Considerations

Half kegs of beer can also be purchased. A half keg contains just under eight gallons of beer. This is 124 cups of beer if you're serving it in 8 oz. glasses.

Warning

If you are purchasing a keg for a restaurant or bar, you must keep other factors such as beer taps in mind. Maintaining beer taps can be a difficult process. Many restaurants and bars serve keg beer, and the cleanliness of the tap lines contributes largely to the taste. Professional companies are often hired to clean tap lines in order to flush out old beer residue.
