Animal Urine as a Deterrent to Chipmunks thumbnail
Chipmunks may be cute in the wild but can wreak havoc in a garden.

Animals mark their territory with urine as a way of communicating with other animals. Fox or coyote urine can be an effective deterrent to garden pests such as chipmunks and other rodents. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How It Works

    • Fox and coyote are natural predators to chipmunks. Chipmunks smell their predator's urine and may believe fox or coyote are in the area. The predator's scent can keep chipmunks out of your garden or other area where you have applied the product.

    Application

    • Various products are available in liquid, powder or granular form. Sprinkle or spray the product following application methods and rates that the manufacturer recommends. Reapply the product as necessary, especially following heavy rains or after the recommended time limit has expired.

    Cautions

    • Most natural or organic products are safe to use around children and household pets. Follow all precautions the manufacturer provides and use the product only as intended.

    Availability

    • Chipmunk repellents containing fox or coyote urine are available at hardware stores, garden supply stores and online outlets.
