The Best Types of Filters for RO Systems
A quality reverse osmosis (RO) system is of paramount importance when it comes to ensuring drinking water is pure and free from contaminants. In order to purchase the best filter for a reverse osmosis filter system, a range of factors should be considered.
-
Method
-
Reverse osmosis takes place when water is pressurized and sent through a special membrane filter that traps various microscopic particles, including chlorine, pesticides, saline and other contaminants. Various filters are available in a range of prices and functions. The finer the membrane and the more filtering stages used, the more contaminants are removed from the water.
Cost
-
The less expensive filters (costing under $250) need to be changed more frequently than the higher priced filters, because they don't last as long. In an inexpensive system, the membrane lasts between one to two years, while the more costly systems have membranes lasting between five and seven years. These filters can be purchased either online or from various brick-and-mortar stores, including Sam's Club, Walmart, Lowe's and Home Depot.
-
Manufacturing
-
The best RO filters to use are those that are manufactured under strict conditions, subject to inspection and verification. Some of the more inexpensive systems are imported from facilities that have not been tested or inspected. Quality RO filters are certified by the National Sanitation Foundation.
Multi-filters
-
The more filters involved in the RO system, the more effective it will be. Having filters for five-stage systems are preferable to the lesser three- or four-stage systems, which require more maintenance.
Technical Support
-
When choosing a filter for the RO system, technical support is important. A defective or poorly-installed system will serve little to no purpose and having technical support to assist in repairing or replacing the system is something to consider in choosing the right filter.
