Legal Structure
-
In terms of legal structure, law firms follow the same organizational types as other business entities, including limited liability companies, sole proprietorships, large corporations and partnerships. Small firms consisting of under three people tend to opt for the limited liability company structure. This legally protects the individual owners from the firm's liabilities.
Management Sructure
-
Managers in law firms are referred to as senior partners. Senior partners in law firms may employ chief operating officers and executive directors who take on human resources, operations and administrative roles.

Departments
-
When more than one founding partner exists within the organization, each partner may become the head of his own department specific to his area of expertise. Each partner may then employ and train junior lawyers and other members of staff to grow his own department.
