Mustang LX Convertible FAQ
The Ford Mustang LX Convertible was a part of the third-generation of Ford Mustangs, also known as Fox bodied Mustangs. Although the third-generation Ford Mustang was available from 1979 to 1993, the Ford Mustang LX with a convertible top was not released until the 1983 model year, however it was not available in the LX trim; the LX trim arrived a year later. The Ford Mustang remained rear-wheel drive.

Introduction of the Mustang Convertible LX

Both the 1984 and 1985 Ford Mustang LX convertible were equipped with a 2.3 L four cylinder, 88 horsepower engine. The LX convertible was available with a standard four-speed manual transmission or an optional three-speed automatic transmission. Production numbers remained quite low with only 17,600 convertibles being produced in 1984 and 15,110 convertibles produced in 1985.
1986 through 1990

The Ford Mustang LX convertible had an optional 5.0 L V8, 200 horsepower engine starting in the 1986 model year. The Ford Mustang LX convertible also received an upgraded interior as well as dashboard layout. The 1990 Ford Mustang also was the first Mustang to receive a driver's side airbag.

1991 through 1993: End of an Era

The 1991 Ford Mustang LX convertible with the optional 5.0 L V8 engine received updated five-spoke, 16-inch wheels and the base 2.3 L engine increased from 88 horsepower to 105 horses. The Ford Mustang LX remained unchanged until 1993; the last model year for the Fox body mustang.
