Clothing-Donation Valuation Guide
To write off clothing donation as a charitable donation, the IRS requires that they be in good condition. They must be claimed at a fair market price, or at a price consumers pay in thrift or consignment shops.
-
Geography
-
To determine the fair market value for clothing items in your area, visit local consignment shops or thrift stores and look for similar items in similar condition to establish a price range. Different geographic areas will have different price ranges for clothing items.
Identification
-
For a general idea, a 2010 guideline from the Salvation Army sets a range for adult shirts at $2.50 to $14. A coat would garner between $10 and $50. Children's pants would be around a few dollars up to $12.

Considerations
-
Even if the items donated have never been worn and are in brand-new condition, they will not be valued at the price originally paid or even near that price.
