Pennsylvania Erosion Control Guidelines

Your land may be subject to Pennsylvania erosion control guidelines.

Erosion can cause severe damage to land. Because of this, the U.S. Congress passed the Soil Conservation Act in the 1930s. Since that time, many states, including Pennsylvania, have implemented their own erosion guidelines.

  1. Function

    • The Pennsylvania Erosion Control Guidelines allow local government agencies to issue permits for projects and buildings that potentially create erosion. In addition, the agency notifies the appropriate conservation agency of projects that affect at least five acres of Pennsylvania land.

    Jurisdiction

    • Almost any project or entity that is moving dirt is subject to the Pennsylvania Erosion Control Guidelines. This includes building, mining, farming, utility work and other industries and projects.

    Location

    • The Pennsylvania Erosion Control Guidelines can be found in Chapter 102 in the 25 PA Code. The technical aspects of the guidelines are located in Sections 102.12 and 102.13; the control plan guidelines for erosion are in the same section.
