Job Duties

Clearly and accurately interpreting communications between patients and medical personnel is the main job duty. The interpreter translates both oral and written communications. She must assist through all phases of treatment to ensure proper treatment and medications are dispensed.
Skill Requirements

Fluency in English and the translated foreign language is essential. Patience and empathy help defuse anxious situations. Acquaintance with cultural and ethnic beliefs and jargon is helpful.

Completion of an in-house medical interpretation training program is normally required. Some employers prefer a certificate in medical translation as well. Background in a medical environment is a plus.
