Sizes
-
If you're decorating a small space, using short columns is usually best. For instance, place a short Greek column in the corner of the hallway, and place a lush green plant on top. Or use a marble column in the bathroom and accent it with a vase or a set of rolled designer towels that matches your bathroom decor.
Types
-
Most types of Greek columns that you'll find at home decor stores are Doric, which means there are twenty 'flutes' or ridges around the column and an elaborate design at the top of the column. You can find columns in a number of colors as well; many come in neutral shades such as tan, gray and white, so they'll match the furniture you've selected for your home.

Other Considerations
-
If you have a significant amount of space in your foyer or living room, it's a good idea to think about installing large columns to give the area a regal feel. You can even paint the columns in colors that will allow you to change your furniture while still matching the columns. For instance, deep-brown columns look great against tan and gold furniture as well as red and orange decor.
