CIA operations officers must pass stringent selection criteria. An aspiring CIA operations officer must complete a lengthy application process. Applicants undergo a comprehensive background investigation, reference checks from childhood, physical and mental health assessments, and must pass a polygraph examination, says the CIA.
Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The Undergraduate Scholarship Program provides initial work exposure with the CIA. The CIA offers the Undergraduate Scholarship Program to high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores. According to the CIA, scholarship recipients receive an annual salary, health insurance, and a maximum of $18,000 each year for tuition and fees. Students must complete summer work internships in Washington, District of Columbia.

Professional Trainee Program

The Professional Trainee Program exposes new college graduates to the CIA. Recent college graduates without any previous CIA exposure must complete a Professional Trainee Program. This training curriculum is the first step to become an operations officer.
Clandestine Service Trainee Program

CIA operations officers spend most of their careers overseas. Prospective CIA operations officers with previous CIA work experience must complete a one-year structured training regimen called the Clandestine Service Trainee Program. Professional Trainee Program graduates must complete this program to complement their preliminary training.
