  1. Fortune Cookie History

    • The origins of the fortune cookie are cloudy at best. One theory is that the cookie was based in the 14th century when Taoist's priests would place messages into moon cakes to forewarn of impending uprisings. Another story is that in the 19th century rice cakes had fortunes placed inside them and were handed out from the Hyotanyama Shrine in Japan. Finally, the last possible origin of the fortune cookie comes from America during the construction of the railroads: Chinese railroad workers would make cookies with messages of good will inside them and hand them out during the holiday.

    • According Fornia Fortune Cookie Company, when fortune cookies are placed on the table, only 21 percent will refuse the cookie, while 97 percent will read the fortune, and 67 percent will read their fortune to the others at the table.

    China Connection

    • The fortune cookie is an American product and was not introduced to China until the 1990s, when it was dubbed the "Genuine American Fortune Cookie."
