How to Convert Gold Weight
The traditional unit of weight for gold is the troy ounce. Jewelry items and coins often weigh less than an ounce of 24 carat gold, so it is often necessary to convert the gold weight to grams and grains.
-
Grains and Grams
-
An ounce of grocery items equals 28.35 grams. But it takes 480 grains or 31.10 grams to equal one troy ounce of gold. Therefore, if the gold item weighs 240 grains or 15.55 grams, it would register as half a troy ounce.
Pennyweights
-
It takes 20 pennyweights to equal a troy ounce. If an item weighs 10 pennyweights, it equals half a troy ounce.
-
Troy Pounds and Kilograms
-
A grocery store pound equals 16 ounces. A pound of gold, however, contains 12 troy ounces and weighs the equivalent of 373.24 grams. Also, 32.15 troy ounces equals a kilogram of gold.
