The Smithsonian Castle offers tours every weekend.

The Smithsonian is comprised of 19 museums and nine research centers, making it the largest museum and research organization in the world. Docent-guided and self-guided tours are offered throughout the year, except December 25, when the complex is closed.

  1. Smithsonian Castle

    • Tour the Museum of Natural History.
      Tour the Museum of Natural History.

      Start at the Smithsonian Castle, home to the Information Center, benefactor James Smithson's crypt and the Castle Cafe. The Castle is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and offers free tours on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m and 10:30 a.m. and on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

    Planning Your Tours

    • Free tours are offered throughout the day on weekends. Plan your tour in advance by reviewing the daily schedule of museum offerings. Most of the museums are open from 10 a.m to 5:30 p.m.

    Other Tours

    • The Butterfly Pavilion, located at the Natural History Museum, offers tours among live butterflies and exotic plants. Known as Butterflies & Plants: Partners in Evolution, the tour runs throughout the day from 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Self-guided Tours

    • If you prefer do-it-yourself tours, or you miss a scheduled tour or the scheduled tours don't fit into your schedule, you can plan ahead and print out self-guided tour brochures online, or pick up the brochures on-site.
