Purpose of Eye Lashes
Eyelashes are a trait humans and some mammals share. It's a protective feature that guards the eye from some types of damage. Considered a sign of feminine beauty to many cultures, many women darken and curl their lashes for effect.

Warning System
-
The eyelashes are sensitive to touch in the same way a cat's whiskers are. They detect objects coming towards the eye and warn of imminent danger of poking or damage. The eyelash triggers the "eyelid closing reflex," which causes us to blink when this warning occurs.

Eyelashes are capable of catching small amounts of debris and holding them away from the sensitive surface of the eye. For some mammals, like camels or horses, this keeps flies and sand out of the eye. Camels have a double row of long interlocking lashes to protect them from the constant bombardment of sand particles.

Replacement
-
There are times eyelashes are damaged or missing due to disease or injury. Transplants have been developed to replace lost eyelashes on burn victims. While eyelash replacement and improvement are generally for health reasons, some women have turned to these methods to improve the look of their eyelashes for cosmetic purposes.
