How to Compare CFL Bulbs
More energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) still have some kinks that the industry is working out. A little knowledge about CFLs can help you choose the right bulb for your needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Watts and Lumens
-
Most people know the difference between 60-, 75- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs. But wattage is actually a measurement of energy used, while "lumens" measure brightness. CFLs are primarily measured in lumens although equivalent wattage is generally included on packaging.
Guidelines
-
Purchase a 15-watt CFL (900 lumens) for general room lighting. Purchase a 29-watt CFL (1,750 lumens) for reading purposes. Purchase a 10-watt CFL (500 lumens) for ambient lighting or to highlight a piece of artwork.
-
Use a Different Combination
-
Some brands of 60-watt-equivalent CFLs do not seem to give off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. You may need to replace them with two 75-watt-equivalent CFLs in some ceiling fixtures. CFLs may take a minute or two to "warm up." The bulb may get brighter after it's on for a minute or two.
Find The Right Color
-
Light from fluorescent lights can make people look pale and bleak. CFL lighting has been improved and can give you the same kind of lighting you're used to from incandescent bulbs. Look for CFL packages labeled "2700 degrees Kelvin" or "warm-white." If you seek a brighter, "whiter" light there are 5000 degrees Kelvin or "bright white" color temperatures and everything in between. You may have to experiment to find what you're happy with.
Find the Right Shape
-
Some CFLs are larger than their incandescent equivalents and won't fit your lamp. Know how big a bulb your light source can accommodate. Light shades that rest directly on the bulb with a metal clip do not work well with a spiral CFL bulb. There may be a CFL with a shape very similar to the old-style bulb you are replacing. These newer CFLs are available on many online sites.
