  1. Education and Physical Fitness

    • To be accepted into the forest ranger training program in Maine, you need to have at least an associate degree, with 15 credit hours in natural sciences. The state defines natural sciences as sciences relating to the natural world and the environment, such as forestry, biology, zoology, botany, chemistry, geology or physics. Applicants also need to pass a physical fitness test consisting of sit-ups, push-ups, and running 1.5 miles.

    Maine Forest Ranger Academy

    • Forest ranger applicants who meet the education and physical fitness requirements undergo a series of interviews before being admitted to the Maine Forest Ranger Academy at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. During the 14- to 16-week program, recruits are trained in all of the duties of a forest ranger, including wildfire management, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations.

    Field Training

    • After completing the Forest Ranger Academy, new forest rangers complete a six-month field training program under the supervision of an experienced ranger.
