Ink Pens That Are Made From Recycled Material

Using recycled materials to make ink pens preserves natural resources such as crude oil.

In an effort to support the environment, some commercial companies who produce writing utensils are using recycled materials to make pens. Reusable goods such as denim, currency, plastic bottles, rubber tires and even computer motherboards are used to create the outer shells, or casings, of ink pens.

  1. Recycled Currency Pens

    • Currency that is officially removed from United States circulation is shredded by the government. To avoid crowding our landfills, the government is allowing shredded currency to be converted into recycled products. Commercial companies who want to manufacture ink pens from shredded currency must make an official business request through The Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

    Recycled Denim Pens

    • Pen manufacturers are finding things to do with unwanted denim (jeans) material. Recycled denim ink pens help to protect the environment by recycling denim clothing and plastic (disposable) pens that would otherwise sit in landfills. According to Eco-Action, over the period of one year, more than 6 billion pens are thrown away in the United States.

    Recycled Motherboard Pens

    • Inside every computer is a motherboard, or an electronic circuit board that enables a computer to process information. Nearly every home, business and school in America uses a computer. Eventually computers break or stop working. A company named Perpetual Kid has created a line of ink pens made from recycled computer motherboards.
