History of Malta's Weather

History of Malta's Weather thumbnail
Malta has what is generally called a Mediterranean climate.

Malta is an island republic in the southern Mediterranean Sea. It consists of seven islands and has a diverse and extensive history. Its weather is typical of its geographic location.

  1. Basic Weather Patterns

    • Throughout its history, Malta has experienced weather indicative of its position in the Mediterranean. Its summers are generally mild and may include significant rainfall. The temperature during winter usually does not drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Summers are very sunny and warm, although not oppressively so. The average temperature for August, the warmest month, is 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Average humidity ranges from a low of 59 percent in July to a high of 68 in December.

    Sea Temperature

    • Because of the rather temperate autumns and winters, sea temperature is never exceedingly cold. The common low water temperature is about 59 degrees and the high is close to 80 degrees.

    Storms

    • Malta typically does not experience serious "snow or violent storms." In December 2008, however, the islands of Malta were hit with a major hail storm. In places the accumulation of hail was so deep that people could not open the doors of their houses and required emergency personnel to clear their exits.
