Spanish Vs. Italian Fountains

Spanish Vs. Italian Fountains thumbnail
The Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy, is a lavish and detailed masterpiece.

Fountains are often the center of history, beauty and landscaping. Many of us choose to adorn our backyards with fountains. We may even throw a penny into a fountain in our local mall. Today's designs are often styled after Spanish fountains or Italian fountains. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Spanish Fountains

    • Many Spanish fountains draw inspiration from Spanish missions and villages. Terracotta and brown colors are quite common. Today, many fountains will be made of concrete so they will last longer. The fountains will often be either two- or three-tiered. Circular patterns and arched details, including brick-like arches, are often seen.

    Italian Fountains

    • Italian fountains tend to be detailed and lavish. They are grand, as large statues are often found atop them. Multiple fountain tiers are often used as well. A lighter colored white or gray is common for Italian fountains, which often tell a story.

    Similarities

    • Looking at two famous fountains show how Italian and Spanish fountains are similar. Both the Trevi Fountain in Rome and the Plaza de Cibeles Fountain in Madrid were created in the 17th century. The Trevi fountain features the Greek god of the sea, Neptune. Two sea horses, one calm and one unruly, are pulling Neptune. This shows the different temperaments of the sea. The Plaza de Cibeles Fountain features The goddess of fertility, Cybele, being pulled by lions, showing her power and nature.
