Sun Java certification, now called Oracle Java certification, has many paths. The certification process for entry-level titles, such as Oracle Certified Associate, involves taking a test and passing. However, upper-level titles, such as Oracle Certified Master, require taking a test, which involves submitting an essay and completing an assignment (see Resources).

Entry-Level Certification

Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 5/SE 6 is the lowest certification level offered. It is suited for college students working with Java, those working in a Java environment and beginning Java programmers. Before Oracle's title change, this certification was known as Sun Certified Java Associate (SCJA).
Professional-Level Certification

Oracle offers many titles for Java certification in the professional field, including SE 5 Programmer, SE 5 Web Component Developer, SE 5 Business Component Developer, SE 6 Programmer, SE 6 Developer and four Enterprise Edition certifications.
Aside from the test, professional certifications also require prior certification. For example, the Oracle Certified Professional, Java Platform and Enterprise Edition 6 Web Services Developer certification requires a test and previous certification as either an Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 5 or SE 6 Programmer.

Master-Level Certification

Oracle offers two master certifications: Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer and Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect.
Both certifications require prior certification and successful completion of an exam process, which includes an essay and programming project.
