An SR-22 form allows suspended- or revoked-license drivers to legally drive again.

If your driver license is suspended or revoked and you want to drive again, you must carry an SR-22 certificate of insurance that is obtained from your auto insurance company and submitted to the state with a fine.

  1. States that Require SR-22 Forms

    • A majority of states in the U.S. require an SR-22 certificate, with the exception of North Carolina, New York, Delaware, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, according to SR22Guide.com. However, if you move to a non-SR-22 state, you are required by law to retain the SR-22 in the state in which the suspension or revocation was sentenced.

    Obtaining an SR-22

    • Contact your auto insurance company for an SR-22 insurance certificate. The additional SR-22 coverage may increase your premium, but this depends on the carrier. If you do not have auto insurance because you do not own a car, a non-owner SR-22 insurance policy, which covers only the driver and not a vehicle, must be obtained, advises Insurance.com.

    Submitting the SR-22

    • SR-22 certificates must be submitted to the state's Department of Public Safety or Department of Motor Vehicles with a monetary fine, which varies by state. Once the state receives it, your license will be reinstated. Keep your policy up-to-date or your license will be re-suspended or re-revoked.
