Allergies and Vent Covers

Allergies and Vent Covers thumbnail
Cleaning vent covers can help remove dust and other allergens.

You know about allergens outside your home like pollen and molds. Allergens can also be found inside your home. Conscientious cleaning can help reduce them, including taking care of the vent covers on the air ducts. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Issues

    • Allergens can travel through the air in your home. As your heating or air-conditioning system circulates air, allergens can travel through the air ducts, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The vent covers that cover the air vents in each room can trap dust and allergens.

    Cleaning

    • Cleaning the vent covers in your home can remove dust and allergens from them. If you have not cleaned the covers in a while, unscrew them from the wall and wash with a damp cloth. Touch up cleaning can be performed by vacuuming them with your vacuum's hose, according to "Dad's Own Housekeeping Book."

    Considerations

    • If you have recently moved into a home where the previous owners smoked or had pets, cleaning the air ducts as well as the air vents could help eliminate allergy triggers in your new house. You can purchase filters that fit over vent covers to further eliminate allergens from the air in your home.
