Lettuce grows well in a container garden.

Gardeners may plant lettuce in a container garden and it will grow well as long as proper conditions are maintained. The container garden may be kept indoors or outdoors throughout the year. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Considerations

    • The National Gardening Association explains that lettuce prefers full sun and somewhat cool temperatures. Therefore, gardeners should place container gardens with lettuce on sunny balconies during cool seasons or in indoor windows away from heaters and hot appliances.

    Size

    • The larger the container, the more room the lettuce will have to grow. The National Gardening Association recommends a container that holds at least 5 gallons of soil to plant small varieties of leafy greens. Large lettuce varieties may need even larger containers.

    Care

    • Container gardens have less soil, so they dry out more quickly than outdoor gardens. The association warns that gardeners must water and fertilize container gardens more regularly than outdoor gardens. Water lettuce whenever the soil feels dry to prevent its leaves from wilting.
