Water Quality & Temperature for Pet Turtles

Water Quality & Temperature for Pet Turtles thumbnail
Turtles require ultraviolet light so their bodies can process vitamins.

Water turtles are popular pets, but they are also high-maintenance animals, and many die because of improper care. These animals will live many years if they are provided with the correct temperature, proper lighting and high water quality.

  1. Types

    • Temperature requirements vary depending on the type of turtle. Spiny soft-shelled turtles prefer a temperature between 72 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Painted turtles need slightly warmer water, between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit and red-eared sliders prefer their water temperature in the upper 80s. Use a submersible water heater to regulate the temperature.

    Water Quality

    • According to the website B & B Pet Stop, turtles can become seriously ill from bacterial infections if they are kept in contaminated water. Change their tank water at least once or twice a week. Feeding the animal in a separate tank and waiting until it defecates cuts down on the number of water changes. Another option is to install an internal or small power filter to purify the water between changes.

    Additional Requirements

    • Water turtles need a dry, well-lit area where they can bask, according to B & B Pet Stop. Hang a basking light over the designated area. Keep the basking temperature between 85 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit during daylight hours.
