A traditional Catholic baptism is supposed to signify the welcoming of a person into God's family and the saving of that person's soul. Godparents often give gifts to the baptized person to commemorate this important event.

  1. Age

    • Catholic baptisms are encouraged as soon as possible after birth, but may be completed at any age. Baptism gifts thus must be age appropriate. For example, an age-appropriate gift for an infant might be a plush angel teddy bear, while a gift for a 5-year old might be a basic puzzle with a Bible story image. A teen might enjoy a Bible-study journal or a cross pendant.

    Learning

    • At a Catholic baptism, the parents and godparents assume responsibility for the child's spiritual development. Anything that will encourage the child as he grows to become familiar with the Catholic doctrines are good gifts. These might include Bible- and prayer-board books, picture puzzles and games, CDs or MP3s of Christian hymns and children's songs.

    Cost

    • Because the Catholic church favors humility and charity, baptism gifts should remain minimal in cost. Some of the best low-cost gifts include "first" rosaries with plastic beads and a ceramic or wooden cross the parents may hang in the child's room.
