Topsoil has many uses around the garden. Topsoil is used in grading and enhancing drainage around homes and backyards. Topsoil can also be used as a base for sod.
Appearance

Topsoil varies in appearance, depending on the area it is from and the quality of the product. Typically, topsoil is brown, with a compactable texture. Topsoil is also relatively heavy.

Materials

Topsoil is typically composed of 5 percent organic matter, 25 percent each of air and water and 45 percent mineral grains. Mineral grains come from the primary bedrock of the area. Water helps decompose mineral grains and dissolve nutrients. Air allows for spaces to form reservoirs. Organic matter prevents the soil from drying up.
