Topsoil is the soil on the surface of the earth that contains the most organic matter. Topsoil is made of humus, clay and sand. Topsoil also contains organisms, microorganisms and organic material. Does this Spark an idea?

    • Topsoil has many uses around the garden. Topsoil is used in grading and enhancing drainage around homes and backyards. Topsoil can also be used as a base for sod.

    Appearance

    • Topsoil varies in appearance, depending on the area it is from and the quality of the product. Typically, topsoil is brown, with a compactable texture. Topsoil is also relatively heavy.

    Materials

    • Topsoil is typically composed of 5 percent organic matter, 25 percent each of air and water and 45 percent mineral grains. Mineral grains come from the primary bedrock of the area. Water helps decompose mineral grains and dissolve nutrients. Air allows for spaces to form reservoirs. Organic matter prevents the soil from drying up.
