What to Wear to a Black-Tie Event for Women
The "Black-Tie Required" invite is often met with confusion. What does that mean exactly? What should a woman wear to such an event? There are a few guidelines to follow when choosing an outfit, though modern expectations have become more relaxed.
-
Tradition
-
Black is a common color choice for formal events. Black-tie events traditionally require floor length, cocktail dresses or evening separates for women. The longer lengths are considered more formal than shorter lengths. These are usually paired with heels and sparkly jewelry. Black is often the color of choice, as it compliments everything.
Invitation vs Tradition
-
A black-tie dinner requires more formal dress than simply having drinks. Black-tie attire can mean many things. Today, it is the invitation rather than tradition that indicates appropriate attire. The more effort expended by the host or hostess, the more formal the required dress. For example, a short cocktail dress would be appropriate for early drinks, but for more lavish affairs, like dinner an dancing, a more formal dress would be needed.

Considerations
-
Dresses that are appropriate during the day are not necessarily appropriate for evening. The weather outside as well as the time of the event need to be taken into consideration when dressing for a black-tie event. A long, black dress and cape would not be appropriate at a midsummer daytime gathering, but a shorter, brighter colored cocktail style dress would be ideal. Evening events always are more formal than those held during the day.
Color
-
Red dresses are becoming more common at black-tie events. While black is the most common dress color worn to black-tie affairs, there are a number of other appropriate choices. Black may be the safest choice, but all dark colors, like plum, navy and maroon are also very suitable for formal occasions. Red is flattering on almost everyone and is becoming a more popular color choice. Ultimately, the color choice is up to the wearer's personality and comfort level.
Accessories
-
Elegant shoes complete a formal outfit. Suggested accessories include sparkly jewelry, such as earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Pearls and other gemstone pieces are also appropriate. Elegant high-heeled shoes are required for evening events, and heeled sandals are appropriate for daytime, summer events. A small evening purse or clutch should be carried for small necessities. A big, bulky daily-use purse would be out of place. Consider wearing the hair up if it is long. Secure with jeweled clips for an evening event, or fresh flowers for a daytime event.
