Dry & Flaky Dog Skin

Dry and flaky skin is a common ailment in many dogs. This problem has a variety of different causes. Many dry skin issues are minor and easily corrected, but others are warning signs of a more serious condition.

Symptoms

The Dog Health Guide explains that dry skin makes the dog's coat and skin appear dull and dry. Sometimes dogs with dry and flaky skin are intensely itchy, and they occasionally create self-inflicted bald patches or open lesions by biting or scratching at their skin.

Causes

Many dogs experience dry and flaky skin from too-frequent bathing. Poor nutrition is another factor. Dogs need fatty acids such as omega-3, as well as vitamin E, vitamin A and niacin. Seborrhea, a skin disorder characterized by excessively dry or oily and scaly skin, often occurs in breeds such as cocker spaniels, dachshunds and basset hounds. Other more serious causes include thyroid disorders and Cushing's disease.

Prevention/Solution

Bathe dogs only when necessary, and use a dog shampoo rather than a human formula. Consider adding a vitamin supplement to the dog's diet. Medicated shampoos are available that soothe the symptoms of seborrhea. Contact a veterinarian if the symptoms do not improve or appear to worsen.
