The Definition of Occupational Compromise

Occupational compromise deals with compromising a person's integrity, beliefs and health for job-related issues. Occupational hazards compromise an employee's health, while defying moral issues compromises an employee's integrity.

  1. Integrity

    • Integrity is a moral quality a person establishes over time through repeated and consistent actions. It includes personal beliefs and values that define who a person is. Compromising these values at work results in occupational compromise. This happens when the company a person works for has different values and beliefs than the employees. An employee being asked to only tell part of the truth is an example of occupational compromise.

    Hazards

    • Another form of occupational compromise is occupational hazards. These occur when employees are exposed to harmful working conditions that lead to illness, injury or death. Occupational hazards compromise a person's health by exposing employees to toxic chemicals or having them work in unsafe conditions.

    Causes

    • Occupational compromises are caused by employers not looking out for their employees. Hazards often are avoided if employers take the appropriate precautions and steps for avoiding them. Compromising integrity often happens when employees are afraid of losing their jobs if they stand up to their employer.
