How High to Fence a Deer Feeder

Fencing around a deer feeder can be accomplished simply and affordably. Exactly what you are trying to keep away from the feeder Will determine your design.

  1. Materials

    • Materials to fence around a feeder range from the cyclone type used around homes and businesses to goat fencing from your local feed store. Four feet above the ground is high enough to keep domestic animals away. Determine the diameter of the fenced area based on how many deer you want to allow to feed at a time. Poles can be the types used with cyclone or barbed wire.

    Hogs

    • Hogs are about the toughest animal you will have to deal with at most deer feeders. Hogs are persistent and require a much more resilient design. You may need to purchase five-foot tall fence and bury a foot of it in a trench around your perimeter. Pigs will dig.

    Access

    • Unless you intend to climb over every time you fill the feeder, add a gate or access way. Without any opening, young deer might not be able to get to the feed.
