    Planting

    • Barley grass seeds require a planting depth of approximately 2 inches, and winter seedlings do best when planted between the months of October and January. Barley producers normally have to plant seeds annually because the grass does not self-seed reliably, according to University of California, Davis.

    Growing Conditions

    • Barley grass can withstand moderate drought conditions and can tolerate soil that contains high levels of salt. Barley seeds can survive temperatures as low as 17 degrees Fahrenheit.
