Army National Guard soldiers earn enlistment points for promotions and retirements in a variety of ways. Soldiers earn points just for showing up for required unit training, but can earn more by taking on more duties.

  1. Participation Points

    • Each year, Army National Guard soldiers earn 15 points, just for being a member of the Army National Guard. These points are called participation points, and are awarded as long as the soldier is a member in good standing.

    Unit Drills and Annual Training

    • Soldiers also earn points in the Army National Guard for attending required unit training assemblies. These events, known as "drill weekend" are held one weekend each month. The soldier earns four points per weekend. Soldiers also receive another 15 points for attending the unit's two weeks of annual training, usually held each summer.

    Deployments

    • Soldiers also receive points for deployments. A soldier earns one point for each day of the deployment.

    Correspondence Course and Computer-Based Training

    • Soldiers also receive points for completing military correspondence courses and computer-based training classes. Point values for these courses vary from one to sixty.
