Advertising designers use a mixture of psychology, design expertise and marketing knowledge to create print-based and visually oriented advertisements that increase a product's desirability in the eyes of prospective consumers.

The All Art Schools website indicates that advertising designers usually fall into one of three job headings. Creative directors spearhead all operations within the graphic arts department, including sound elements and visual layouts. Graphic designers produce artwork and copy for advertisements, while art directors supervise and coordinate the work of graphic artists.

Advertising designers must have at least a certificate or an associate degree in advertising, art and design, graphic design or a related field. More commonly, however, aspirants start their careers with an entry-level position in advertising design after obtaining a bachelor's or a master's degree. Most designers work between one and three years before they advance in their field.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic designers working in the advertising and public relations industries earned $43,540 as of 2008. The lowest-paid graphic artists earned less than $26,110 as of 2008, while the highest salaries exceeded $74,660.
