VoIP services rely on SIP proxy servers to provide telephone service via the Inernet.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone providers, which rely on the Internet to supply service, use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) proxies as a part of their telephone service system. SIP proxies establish sessions between multimedia sessions, including VoIP phone calls

    • VoIP telephone providers may employ an SIP proxy to handle the setup of voice calls. According to 3CX, an SIP proxy "is also known as an SIP Server or an SIP Registrar." Session Initiation Protocol uses the proxy server to route calls to the correct location, to authenticate and authorize users for services and to provide features to the users.

    Benefits

    • InteropNet Labs explains that SIP offers both flexibility and depth. It can accommodate multimedia calls, including video, in addition to standard voice calls. The SIP proxy servers route calls to the correct destination by converting numbers or extensions to computer Internet Protocol addresses. Because the SIP proxy acts as an intermediary between SIP devices (such as telephones), the devices themselves do not have to know the destination IP address to make the call.

    Considerations

    • The SIP proxy is only necessary to establish the call; the voice data travel directly between the SIP devices (telephones) after the initial setup. However, the proxy may remain connected to the call to continue to provide features to the users. For example, the proxy may provide SIP telephone users with conferencing or accounting services.
