DNA can be sampled from many different types of tissue.

DNA tests are used to determine paternity, family relationships, identity or ancestry and are also done for forensic purposes. There are several different ways of collecting genetic material for DNA analysis.

  1. Buccal Swabs

    • Buccal swabs, also called cheek swabs, are the most common way of collecting DNA samples, as they can be done in just a few minutes and are painless. A cotton swab is rubbed on the inside of the cheek of the DNA donor to collect DNA-containing cells. This type of test can be done at home and the swab mailed in for analysis.

    Amniocentesis

    • Genetic analysis can be done on an unborn baby. Cells are collected from the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus by amniocentesis.

    Blood or Other Tissue

    • DNA analysis can be performed on blood or other tissue as well. This type of DNA testing can even be performed on an individual who has passed away if the cells are still viable.
