A magnolia tree features large, fragrant flowers.

Magnolia trees, with their thick, dark green foliage and large, powerfully fragrant flowers, are ideal shade trees for southern landscapes. There are over 100 species of magnolia that vary in height and require different watering protocols. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Height

    • Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as southern magnolia, grows to a height of 60 to 80 feet. This is large for many home landscapes, but there are several cultivars that grow to shorter heights.

    Cultivars

    • "Little Gem" is a compact cultivar that grows up to 20 feet tall. "Greenback" matures at a height of 30 feet. "Bracken's Brown Beauty" grows to about 40 feet. Shorter cultivars usually have smaller leaves and flowers than the standard magnolia tree.

    Watering

    • Keep young transplants evenly moist until they are established. Mature magnolia trees tolerate moderate drought, as well as high moisture, and thrive on the rainfall they receive, except during times of prolonged drought.
