What are the Reasons for a Slow DSL?
Choosing DSL brings about the expectation that you will be able to browse the Web, download and stream movies faster. This sometimes is not the case as there are times when your DSL seems slow and unresponsive, which can be caused by a variety of reasons.
-
Phone Lines
-
Being further away from a phone service hub can cause slower connectivity speeds. With technology improving phone lines, the biggest issue with phone lines and slower DSL speeds tends to be the phone line running from the street to the house. Testing and fixing the phone line to your house should be done by your phone company.
Computer
-
There are many issues that can slow down your DSL speeds that originate on your computer. An old or faulty network interface card can cause slow speeds or even to completely lose Internet connections. Viruses and spyware often will slow down your connectivity. A quick way to diagnose if your computer is the reason for slower DSL speed is to open a program such as Word while downloading a large file. If the program takes a lot longer to load up than normal, the problem is probably on your computer.
-
Server Side Issues
-
Many websites that experience larger amounts of traffic may not be properly equipped to handle such large volumes of traffic. A large amount of traffic on a website causes the server to send information much slower.
Peak Hours
-
There are times when there are large amounts of people online sharing the same DSL line. Phone lines are designed to handle certain amounts of information, and when many people are using them at the same time, information takes longer to reach your computer.
