RN Chemo Certification

Chemotherapy nurses handle lethal medication dosages, and certification provides valuable training.

Chemotherapy management requires nurses to use lethal drugs and highly specialized procedures. Nursing oncology certifications indicate that nurses have completed training requirements as specialized oncology nurses. Certification also offers career advancement opportunities, enhanced employment outlook, and greater earning potential.

  1. Types

    • According to the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC), there are seven different certification options, including oncology certified nurse, certified pediatric hematology oncology nurse, certified pediatric oncology nurse, certified breast care nurse, advanced oncology certified nurse, advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner, and advanced oncology certified clinical nurse specialist.

    Types of Training

    • There are multiple ways to complete the required education and training for varying levels of certification, including degree certification programs, assessment-based certificate programs, and continuing education programs. Certification is based on the nurse's specific field of employment and experience.

    Applications

    • Nurses apply for certification online through ONCC, or submit applications by mail or fax. The fees to mail or fax applications are $25 higher than online registration. Applications must include nurse licensing number, expiration date, credit card number, nursing experience and history, information about completion of 500 hours of supervised practice, and verification of supervised practice.

    Salary Considerations

    • Median salaries range from $62,000 for RN certified oncology nurses, to $79,000 for certified oncology nurse practitioners. Salaries vary by geographic location, type of facility, experience and overall responsibilities.
