Describe FastAccess DSL

Describe FastAccess DSL thumbnail
DSL uses existing telephone wires to transmit digital data.

While FastAccess® DSL refers to a brand of AT&T and it's subsidiary, BellSouth, several other companies offer high-speed access DSL broadband service.

  1. What Is DSL?

    • The terms "digital subscriber line" and "data service line" are more commonly known as DSL. Providing access to the Internet via existing phone lines combined with other hardware, DSL operates on a frequency higher than normal voice audio. This higher frequency enables use of the phone line while connected to the Internet.

    DSL vs Dial-Up

    • In contrast with a dial-up connection, DSL technology remains connected. This enables the user to get "instant/fast" access to the Internet. The use of digital downloads and uploads with DSL also increases the speeds by up to 50 times the speed of normal dial-up connections.

    DSL Considerations

    • The biggest consideration with DSL is the distance from the transmission station. The closer you are to the station the higher your speeds. Many rural areas still do not have DSL service. The condition or age of your phone wiring may also affect the speed and reliability of your DSL service.
