Earthquake Safety Advice

Keep a flashlight close at hand if you live in an earthquake zone.

Being caught in an earthquake, particularly a strong one, is a frightening experience. If you live in or plan to visit an earthquake-prone area, taking time to familiarize yourself with emergency procedures can mean the difference between life and death.

Be Prepared

Identify a safe place that can be reached quickly in the event of an earthquake and ensure that everyone in your home does the same. This can be somewhere as basic as a sturdy table or a doorway. Ensure that supplies are near; these include drinking water, some food, medical supplies, blankets, a battery-operated radio and a flashlight.

During an Earthquake

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center stresses that the most important thing during an earthquake is to remain calm. Stay in your safe place until the earthquake is over and watch out for falling objects.

After an Earthquake

Find everyone who was with you when the earthquake began and check for injuries. Put out any small fires that may have started and clean up any dangerous spillages. Listen to the radio for advice from the authorities. For your own safety, stay out of damaged buildings and be aware that aftershocks could occur at any time.
